About Us
Aesop's
Friends of the Animals - Kavala, took their name from Aesop, a
slave from the island of Samos, who lived during the 6th Century.
This simple slave who lived so long ago is credited with over 600
fables most of which incorporated animals to present human motives
and tendencies. These fables have been told and retold always with
a view towards the improvement of man's conduct and humanity.
In recognition of Aesop and all his fabled animals,
Aesop strives for improvement in man's relationship and treatment
of animals both wild and domestic. Aesop's Friends of the Animals
- Kavala recognizes the importance of human - animal relationships
which in turn provides benefits to humans. Respect and understanding
of animals will create compassion and consideration for others.
Aesop's as the name describes, is an organization
of people that truly care about the welfare of all animals. The
Association formed in 1992 was known as Kavala, Friends of the
Animals, and consisted of a few concerned volunteers with little
or no physical or financial resources. The organization slowly
increased its membership to 180 members over the years and in July
2000 the name was changed to Aesops and registered as an official
charitable organization, number 29/92.
The
primary aim of Aesop's is to continue to reduce the stray population
of dogs in Demos Kavala and Eleutheron areas through a continuous
spay neuter and release campaign. Aesop's attends to sick and injured
animals, and conducts public awareness, sensitivity and anti poison
education programs through newspapers television and radio. Aesop's
continually tries to re-home as many stray dogs and cats as possible.
Aesop's is a charter member of CIDAG, Coalition
in Defense of Animals in Greece and has applied to become an affiliate
member of WSPA, the World Society for the Protection of Animals.
We have received funding and/or support from GAWF - Greek Animal
Welfare Society and GAR - Greek Animal Rescue. Aesop's is part
of the ever growing number of animal welfare organizations in Greece.
At the current time, Aesop's has only 6 Active and
8 semi-active volunteer members. With this website, we intend to
record our activities, increase our membership, attract sponsorship
and identify as many animals as possible that have been helped
by our organization. In addition to encouraging membership, we
want to educate and inform, and continuously raise funds for our
activities, without which we could not exist.
