Action Alert

The Law
The Greek Government in 2003 passed legislation covering companion animal ownership and protection from cruelty and mistreatment. The law is hot linked for your review and reference. Our continuing concern is not the law itself, but the enforcement, for if there is no enforcement, there is no law. (Hot link here)

Poisoning is against the Law
As civilized Orthodox Christians, we have to stop this barbaric practice of poisoning these poor and desperate helpless creatures who did not chose to be abandoned. Please immediately report any posioning to the police, and if witnessed, get as many details including names and dates of the incident.

Animal Cruelty is against the Law
We all know that Greece has a terrible reputation for its treatment of animals which can only be overcome with education and enforcement of the law. All cases of Animal cruelty should be reported to the police so that the law protecting these animals can be enforced.

The Five Freedoms
Animals raised under the control of humans or taken into captivity by humans should be afforded the provisions of the basic Five Freedoms, being adopted increasingly throughout the animal welfare world, as follows:

  • Freedom from hunger and thirst: by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour
  • Freedom from discomfort: by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
  • Freedom from pain, injury and disease: by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
  • Freedom from fear and distress: by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
  • Freedom to express normal behaviour: by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of animals' own kind
