Dear friends and fellow citizens,

The cowardly cruel and inhumane method of poisoning strays took place on Thursday 8 January in Nea Peramos, municipality of Demos Eleftheron.
One more time the unlawful, barbaric and uncivilized low of humans shows itself to the world. More than 18 dogs, and who knows how many cats, died Thursday evening.

The miscreants, who had in mind a massive extermination, took good care to put out of sight and quickly dispose of the corpses of the dead animals; except for two of them who died in front of the eyes of their owners. We are in the year 2009 and the mentality of the ‘50s and 60s “easy solution” still exists. The preparation and distribution of the “FOLA” (poisoning), can’t make these sub humans think that there is Devine Justice?  That those eyes that look at them with trust, when they throw the poisoned food, will haunt them for the rest of their lives, and in some way will come back at them? Those poor innocent strays, who were abandoned by insensitive, irresponsible uncaring people.

The absolute cruelty and slaughter, in this case poisoning, according to law, is criminal and should be prosecuted.  This is barbaric and savage devoid any humanity and civilized behavior and an insult to the Greek people. Poisoning is shameful and used instead of insisting and putting pressure all those concerned to obey and enforce the law. Fund the sterilization program, insist on the microchip or other form of identification, and punish those who abandon their animals, so the innocent will die.

According to the law, all strays belong to the municipality and the Mayors have the obligation to care for the animals.  Let us all put pressure on our Mayor to take responsibility in order to solve the problem and let us not turn against the poor innocent animals who are not at all responsible for our weakness to solve the problem. We cannot solve this problem with mass poisoning but only in a more civilized manner that will have long term results.  That is why we vote.  We hope that the next politician, mayor or Member of Parliament will have the right mentality and conviction to deal with problems such these. We ask you to keep your promise that you will care for the strays and the enforcement of the 3170/03.

Most of these strays were neutered and immunized.  They were “adopted” and fed by fellow citizens.  The funds for the neutering of these animals came from members of “Aesop”. To kill is so easy, to care and keep something or someone in life, needs understanding and compassion.  It seems that the executioner(s) had neither.

The civilization of a nation is judged by the way they treat their animals.
It is sad indeed, in the 21st century to act in such inhumane manner.
